Speaker Fruits, a Filipino collective society in the US gives their views on Philippine contemporary art. We also had a blast with the launch of “Ugnay,” Gene De Loyola’s solo exhibition at the Alab Artspace.

GraphikaPinoy Magazine would like to thank John Oseña and the rest of the team from web.com.ph for the support they’ve provided the magazine by granting us additional bandwidth. These past few months we have been experiencing “Bandwidth Exceeded” message on our website because of factors we all could probably guess why.

In this manner, we have revamped Graphikapinoy Magazine’s site to be further interactive to users. It is still a work in progress and a lot of things need to get fixed and added. Finally, comments will be a lot of help to make us better.

Post No Bill

Sitting on a crowded cafe, I took out a sticker I had in my breast pocket, for the longest time, and casually patched it on a garbage/cigarette bin. My adrenalin pumped faster than usual and my face flushed. Wow. This is something I could get use to, if I was still in my youth. My colleagues had mixed reactions to what I did.

One quizzed me and considered it a form vandalism, while the other found it cool. With our small group of three, we could then say that we did, at that moment, represent society’s reaction towards graffiti and street art. In this issue, we hope in someways, may shed a different light to this type of art.

This issue would not have been possible without the cooperation of these wonderful and extremely talented artists featured. My regards to Nicholas Ganz and Tristan Manco for the support. Hope to work with you guys sometime.

A Bite at the Electrolychee Mind

How did the Electrolychee tandem start?

Electrolychee is Marcushiro and Bru. Hatched in September 2005, Electrolychee is a local studio that merges illustration with design. Previous to that, Marcushiro and Bru spent five years doing commercial design for other people, and their various works could be seen in books for children and adults, magazines, web publications, album covers and clothing brands. Both Bru and Marcushiro have earned respect from their peers and a name in the industry, so it was a very easy decision to get together and form Electrolychee. Their works play within the realms of slick, computer-generated vector art and organic, handdrawn imagery.

The high-voltage lychees are also full-time visual artists who frequently showcase their pop-inspired artworks in the metros alternative galleries. Besides painting, participating in design conferences and collaborating with both local and foreign artists, the design studio also produces Electrolychee-branded merchandise. Its a do-it-yourself endeavor thats part of their long-term goal of being a design studio and a lifestyle store in one.

Things in common on Backpacks, Malls and Sketches

If you’ve ever experienced countless bouts of insomnia during Tuesday nights, or an early riser on a Saturday, Robert Alejandro, the on-cam reporter of The Probe Team and Art is- Kool would be surely a familiar face. But little do we know that Robert’s artworks may be a part of our daily lives. Murals of malls, the patriotic feel from a bookstore, or simply hanging out at theme parks, this guy is all behind these deep aesthetic surrounding.

A part of the team that won an International Council of Shopping Centers Design Award for the Alabang Town Center renovation project, Robert’s expertise include space design & environmental graphics for architectural projects, signage systems, murals, backdrops, and thematic design. He has had experience consulting with architects and real estate developers for interior and exterior facade design and renovation.

Robert , an award winning designer, recently launched a children’s mini-library in Barangay Luna in Isabela and gave free art workshops to the youth on its opening day.

Deadlines + Weary Days

One of my pet-peeves is whining. It’s a habit that spurs negativity energy to one’s life. With a regular job to attend to; and Graphikapinoy Magazine’s in mind, I felt like a hound at work. Like a whisper from heaven, I took inspiration from Robert Alejandro, Avid Liongoren , and Electrolychee’s dedication to keep the flame going. What challenges these guys have encountered just to be better on their craft and finally reap the fruits of hardwork.
